Quilty Weekend!

It was a great quilty weekend in one respect, then on Saturday afternoon late I was quilting away and something happened, my machine started breaking needles. I was so upset, hubby worked and worked on it and now it won't pick up the bobbin thread. He will try to fix it tonight but I have a feeling he and my machine will have to make a trip to Wisconsin. :=(
I did get 3 lap quilts quilted Saturday so that wasn't too bad I guess. :D
This coming weekend my grandaughter and I will have a sewing session. She was to make a quilt with this stack of FQ's she picked out a couple of months ago and the pattern in the magazine "Square Deal" is the quilt she will make. I will cut all the strips for her so all she will have to do is sew. I am not comfortable teaching her to use the rotary cutter yet, I would like to hear from you out there how old do you think the girls should be?
Once I got the pattern decided on I was quilting on this piece, wasn't paying close enough attention when I rolled it and ended up quilting over part of the previous row! Not good, soooo I spent some time ripping the bad row out while my machine was being worked on. Do you see a pattern developing here??

I finally decided enough was enough and yesterday after church I just sat at my machine and worked on next year's Christmas Quilt. It is taking forever but that is ok. I am saving all my ends and making a gazillion half square triangles! I want to make a few mini's with these but
will still have zillions leftover.
I have got almost a full tin of them now and I don't have even have the quilt close to being halfway pieced. Sooo, I will probably have a triangle give-away when the quilt is done and
share with a few others that would like to use them in a project.

Happy Monday to one and all!

I'm sorry your sewing machine is having problems. I hate it when mine acts up. I do love the material and pattern your granddaughter picked out. How old is she? I think it depends on their maturity level as to when they could use a cutter. But I would be more inclined to let a 12-13 before a 9-10 year old.

Oh don't you hate that! But maybe you were meant for a break! Your granddaughter's quilt will be really fun for her to make! That is exciting. As for rotary cutting - I think it just depends on the girls (or boys) motor skills and interest.

Wish I could come play at your house. That Christmas Quilt looks very interesting. Hate to say this, but glad you got mine done before your quilt machine decided to take a "break". Hope it is nothing serious. GD quilt project looks like a lot of fun. Wish my GD was interested...but boys are more important right now than sewing.

I sew with my Girl Scouts who are 8, 9 and 10. I wouldn't dream of letting them near a rotary cutter quite yet though. Especially not with 9 of them hanging around. They make ruler/cutter combos that look like big paper cutters, I think those would be safer for sure. I also know that some people use cutting gloves, and again, that would add to the safety. One on one I'm sure ithe supervision will be a little easier.
Sorry to hear about your machine, there seems to be a lot of that going on.

Sounds like you had a great weekend quilting even if your machine is having problems. Hope you get them solved soon. That will be a fun day sewing with your gd. You will have to post pics of that.

I have no idea how old your granddaughter is, but i have a daughter of 11 and I let her rotary cut last winter, when she was just 10, but I have to say she is a very independent and careful child!

I've taught classes to very responsible 11 year olds in the past. I say it all depends on just how "alert" they are to the dangers of "what ifs." For ease of your mind perhaps get her one of those gloves that Fons & Porter use on the opposite hand of the rotary cutter? Just a thought...

Uhoh---sounds like my broken-machine-virus spread to you. Hopefully yours will end as positive as mine and won't require a trip to Wisconsin. Where in Wis? Southern part, I'm guessing....

That stack of fabrics...hhmmmm....yummy eye-candy! Have a fun time this weekend. As for age........can't really help you there. My oldest is 8, and NO WAY JOSE would I allow her yet! Angela (soscrappy) had an idea though, using one of those cutter/ruler one-piece dojabbies.
